The original five volumes were published in 1822-24, with a six-volume edition appearing in 1826. Previously the work has only been available to scholars through specialist libraries. The second volume covers the important years of 1797-1799. In 1797 the British Mediterranean fleet had been forced to withdraw by the Spanish declaration of war. Admiral John Jervis based his fleet at Lisbon and attacked the Spanish on 14th June 1797 gaining an important victory off Cape St. Vincent. This victory was followed by the debilitating mutinies at the Nore and Spithead, which shook national confidence in the Royal Navy. Some of this confidence was restored as Admiral Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet at Camperdown in 1797. The following year the Royal Navy re-entered the Mediterranean with dramatic results, Nelson's crushing victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile isolated Napoleon's army in Egypt and secured British control of the Mediterranean.
