The dramatisation of C.S. Forester's Hornblower stories was the most expensive drama made specifically for television. 'Hornblower's Ship, The History and Their Models' tells the story behind the creation of these models through the research, planning, design and construction by author and professional model maker Martin Saville who managed the entire project from Petrozavodsk in Russia, where the models were built, to the huge tank at Pinewood film studios in London. A high proportion of the £12million spent on the production has gone into the lavish special effects used to recreate the epic sea battles featuring a fleet of eleven specially-commissioned fully-working scale models. In addition, the title includes a full reference section detailing the ship type, full specifications, historical precedents and fictional role of all of the vessels featured to date in the series. Martin Saville has been making ship models for a living for many years. He was senior model co-ordinator and consultant to the Hornblower TV series. |
